Here is a quilt I recently…

Quilt made with blue and green fabrics, squares within squares.
All Squares Quilt

…finished for one of my kids. Like many quilters, I have some projects that have been languishing, er, waiting patiently, to be finished for a long time. This one started about five or six years ago. I dragged said kid along to various quilt shops to hunt for fabrics. I designed this based on a beautiful watercolor illustration by Gail de Marken in the must-read book The Quiltmaker’s Gift Small image of the cover of the book The Quiltmaker's Giftby Jeff Brumbeau. I designed it so it could be made from 10-inch squares of fabric (hellooo precuts), as many as you like. I was going to quilt it with a Triforce in each block, but my kid saved me and decided she’d rather have bubble-circles, which my favorite long-arm quilter lady could do. I finished the top last summer, had it quilted in the fall, and gave it to her over Christmas break. Long time coming, but she loves it. Now she’s doing some quilting of her own and planning the next one she wants me to make for her. She might get it in about, oh, ten years. Heh.

Marching toward April

Image result for free images of daffodilsThis has been a weird month. Many of the things I do monthly haven’t been done. I’m not sure where the time went! It slipped away on quilting, mentoring a quilting friend, planning for life changes for the kid transitioning from college to a mid-course internship, therapies and other kinds of juggling, and book planning. Hmm, guess I’ve been busier than I thought. Well, I will have a story ready for reading soon. I keep saying that, and I hesitate to say anything as pathetic as, “this time it’s different, really” but that is how I feel.

Much to do today. The last of the bills, billing, and a Spring Break trip to a water park. I am only sure that the fun parts will happen!

Cheers, and enjoy the daffodils!

Plaid, Air Force, whatever.

I went shopping with my mom yesterday. We were hunting for a “fashionable” utility jacket. They’re all over the place, but not in colors I can wear. Mostly olive, which is one of those colors that makes me look like I need an ambulance. I bought her a plaid shirt (she’s been wearing plaid button-ups since before the word plaid was on anyone’s fashion radar) and myself a pair of skinny, plum-colored jeans. Now, in spite of my recent (intentional) weight loss, I’m not what anyone would call skinny…but the pants aren’t all that bad if my shirt’s long enough. And the color goes with my new purse.

My recent story research has led me to WWII (which of the men in my heroine’s ancestry went to war? Who stayed home? Why? Did they want to go? Did they come home?). I didn’t know much about my own family’s military history, so I took this opportunity to ask Mom about it.

Uncle One was in the Air Force but was too young to go to WWII. Uncle Two was in the Air Force but got, I think, a marriage deferment that kept him out of WWII. And to round things out, Uncle Three was in the Air Force, during Vietnam, but was always stationed in the continental US. None of them have ever talked about any of that in my hearing.

Pop (my maternal grandfather) was in the Missouri National Guard during some kind of campus rioting in the 1920’s. Their guns were empty. They got spit on and cussed at. That’s all we know about that.

My dad was, what do they call it…4F? He had asthma. But his good friend Stan was a ‘copter pilot. When I was four “Uncle” Stan brought me a shining, golden, cotton-lined kimono as a gift. In my 20’s I had it shadow-box framed in black lacquer. It doesn’t match any of my other decor and never has, but it’s a treasure.

And that’s all I know about my family and the military. So I’m going to be making this stuff up In my heroine’s world, all the angst and joy of military service will be angst and joy I pulled out of a hat. Think it will make a difference if I cover the hat with plaid first?

Post-RWA2016 #1

Amazing. Wonderful. Fantastic. Fun. Beautiful. Yummy.

That’s just a quick summary. I stuffed my brain so full of new information that it took me three days to start processing properly again. I have many, many pictures, and many, many wonderful memories, and I will try to put some here soon. Met some wonderful gals, got lotsa fun swag, including books of course, and planned my career for the next two years at least. Soooo wonderful. Even when I knew it was going to be an unforgettable experience, it still turned out even better than that.

Ciao!

Off to RWA Conference

Greetings all! I’m very excited to be heading out to the 2016 RWA National Conference in San Diego this week with my friend and writing partner Deb. I haven’t done any traveling for a while, so we’re planning to walk, shop, and eat for a couple of days before the conference starts. T-shirts for everyone in the family are on the shopping list!

I’ve been to business conferences before, but there’s something special about a writing conference, especially one where the people are so passionate (pun unavoidable!) about their work. I’m looking forward to listening to great advice from authors I’ve read, authors I’ve never heard of, and complete strangers in the elevator or goody-room line. If previous experience holds up, my brain-sponge will be full to overflowing by the end of it all. Can’t wait!

Check back…I might even be able to figure out how to post a few pictures from my phone 🙂
